Our Instructors

James Cates, Jr., M.D., FAAFP
James W. Cates, M.D., attended high school for four years at Castle Heights Military Academy in Lebanon,Tennessee. Excelling both academically and athletically, Dr. Cates was chosen his senior year by the faculty as Battalion Commander for the entire corp, graduated with honors, and was a varsity letterman in both football and track.

After high school, Dr. Cates attended undergraduate programs at University of Tennessee - Knoxville, University of California at Los Angeles, and Tennessee State University, where he earned his Bachelor of Science. In 1985, Cates graduated from medical school at the Meharry College of Medicine in Nashville, Tennessee, and subsequently completed his three-year residency at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in the Family Physician Program. Dr. Cates has experience in cancer research at the University of Tennessee Medical Center, microbiology work at UCLA, and in the Department of Endocrinology at Vanderbilt University.

Currently, Dr. Cates is board certified in family practice and a Fellow American Academy of Family Practice. He practiced in the field of emergency medicine at Cookeville Regional Medical Center and Livingston Regional Hospital for eleven years before joining Dr. Richard Williams and the staff at Mid State Sports Medicine.

Dr. Cates is currently the President and Chief Executive Officer of Satellite Med, a cutting edge medical institute dedicated to cutting health care costs while improving patient care.


Matt Davis, M.S.P.T.
Matt Davis is a graduate of Andrews University School of Physical Therapy and has his Masters of Science in Physical Therapy. Matt has over 15 years of experience in a wide range of rehabilitation settings: Skilled Nursing Facilities, Outpatient and Sports Medicine Clinics, Home Health, and Inpatient Rehab Centers.

He has specialized in geriatrics and Home Health care and currently owns and operates a contract based home health practice in Tennessee. He has effectively worked with a diverse group of medical equipment companies and providers to successfully meet his patients’ needs in four different states.

Matt’s foremost goal is to search out the optimal equipment necessary to maximally benefit mobility, independence, health, and comfort for his patients and their care providers while meeting Medicare guidelines and regulations. He has been in countless homes full of wheelchairs, walkers, prosthetics and orthotics that were not being used because of poor fitting or wrong application, and yet the patient continued to be in need.

His knowledge and skills in these areas will assist in giving someone the invaluable ability to match a specific need or requirement with the appropriate equipment. His goal has always been to bring maximum functional improvement to his patients.
